Joe Davies

Joe Davies was a dreamer -

and an idealist -

and a volunteer.

Concerned about his spiritual growth, Joe left a successful career in business to pursue his love of music and expand his involvement in community service.

From volunteering his time at the Soule Homestead with his wife, Anita, to arranging a fund-raising concert for Mid-western flood victims, to writing and performing thought-provoking folk songs, Joe’s gifts to his community touched many people.

In that same spirit, Joe Davies was a sponsor of music and musicians. A talented folk-singer/song- writer in his own right, Joe grabbed every opportunity to encourage local musicians, by his own tireless example and by providing places for talented local musicians to play for the public. In this way, he also sought to educate the public about the many forms of traditional and folk music.

Among these opportunities were the Fall Folk Festival and the Summer Concert Series at the Soule Homestead. "The idea behind the Folk Festival and Summer Concert Series was to provide top quality, affordable folk entertainment to the public and to give the many talented musicians in our area a showcase for their talent.  Joe Davies was the man behind the idea," says Karen Dusek, former Executive Director of the Soule Homestead Education Center, Inc.

From 1993 to 1997, Joe Davies was the Fall Folk Festival. He arranged for musicians and sound technicians, set up, served as host and master of ceremonies, performed, and helped clean up when it was all done.  And every year he pushed the envelope, striving to make that year better than the last.

Joe is gone now, but he serves as an inspiration to the many of us it takes to fill his shoes. Joe made the Festival what it is today, so it is only right that it has gone on in his name.

Joe believed that every performer should have a place to present his or her talent to the public. He thought that the goals of the Soule Homestead (Preserving the Past, Preparing the Present, Protecting the Future) matched the goal of having a venue to present folk and traditional music, hence the Summer Concert Series.

In order provide that venue, the Music Committee needs equipment and funds to continue those concerts.  For that reason, we who come after Joe, have established Joe Davies Productions, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of the performing arts.  The purpose of the organization is to produce the music events at the Soule Homestead, purchase and maintain sound equipment for the concerts, and to fund other related activities that the Committee thinks appropriate - including the maintenance of this web site as well as the establishment of a music scholarship in Joe's name.

Donations, which are tax deductible, are always welcome and may be given in person at any of the music events or by mail to Joe Davies Productions, Inc., c/o Soule Homestead, 46 Soule Street, Middleboro, MA 02346.
